Line and Value
Smudge
|
Smudging is a blending technique using a tissue, paper towel or even cotton puffs to move the graphite around in a drawing. I should mention at this point that it is not a good idea to use your fingers to do this method. You could transfer the graphite powder to your food or even breath it in if you get an itchy nose.
|
Start with a drawing with the approximate values as those above. Then with the process of blending with a tissue or a piece of cotton and lifting with your kneaded eraser keep working until you have an approximation of the drawing to the right.

In the next lesson we will discuss tonal value, shading and shadowing. I hope that you enjoy this lesson and will e-mail your comments or suggestions to:
teacher@homeschoolarts.com. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for using this home school arts program. We at HomeSchoolArts would like to encourage you to continue with your fine arts training. Please check out our other art lessons in Perspective, Watercolor, Color Pencil, Pen and Ink and the others, as they become available. We will be continuing to add as we grow. Also keep checking with the lessons as you are doing them. I will continue to refine and update current lessons as your feedback and suggestions come in. I will implement those that will help the program. Please do not be upset if your suggestion is not implemented at this time. I will send you an e-mail explaining why I don't think it would work if that were the case.
